Greenwich Hospital Home Hospice Volunteers

Greenwich Hospital offers an extensive, 12-15 hour training program to prepare volunteers to work effectively with patients in our Home Hospice Program. These patients have decided that further curative treatments will not extend their lives and have chosen palliative, or comfort care, to maximize the quality of life they have remaining. In addition to the services provided by the hospital's interdisciplinary staff, volunteers add a dimension of companionship and assistance to the patients and family—often resulting in friendships that last for many years. Volunteers may spend time with the patient talking or doing a favorite activity, visit with the caregivers or stay with the patient while the caregiver takes a needed break, do simple errands for the family, or do many other activities the volunteer and family members agree will be helpful.

Greenwich Hospital Oncology Volunteers
(for inpatients and outpatients)

Greenwich Hospital offers a comprehensive training program to prepare volunteers to work effectively with cancer patients and their care team. Prospective volunteers must attend the training program learning valuable skills to understand and assist patients who are dealing with cancer and its impact on their lives. Once trained, they have a choice of working in the hospital or at the Bendheim Cancer Center, providing comfort and unhurried attention to patients, families and friends. Volunteer assistance may include talking with a patient, bringing a patient an extra pillow or blanket, doing puzzles or reading a newspaper aloud with a patient, or chatting with family members while the patient sleeps. Volunteers may also support hospital staff by helping make a bed, refilling supply cabinets, or assisting with meals. Volunteers decide their own comfort level with the needs of the day.
