Extraordinary People Who Care
Greenwich Hospital volunteers are a wonderfully diverse group of professionals, retirees, moms, dads and students from Connecticut and New York. In choosing to volunteer, they are doing something meaningful with their free time. More importantly, their service and generosity of spirit make a real difference in the lives of patients and their families.
Volunteers Support Patients, Families and Staff
Our goal as volunteers is to make the hospital experience as pleasant as possible for patients and their families, and to provide hospital staff with support whenever and wherever possible.
Patient and Family Areas
- Escort patients to testing areas
- Assist and comfort family members and keep them informed about their loved ones
- Deliver mail, flowers, books and magazines to patients' bedsides
- Serve as a Pharmacy courier to nurses' stations
- Provide “comfort care” to patients in the Ambulatory, Emergency and Oncology departments.
- Special training is provided for volunteers who choose to work with the Center for Integrative Medicine's “Healing Touch” program or with Home Hospice services and the Oncology Volunteers. Next training program for Oncology Volunteers will be held in April 2010.
Administrative Assistance
There's always a lot of behind-the-scenes action at Greenwich Hospital. Volunteers support clerical needs for various departments.
Hospitality and Retail
A volunteer's smile is a wonderful greeting to patients, families and visitors when they arrive at the hospital or its satellite facilities.
- Welcome visitors, answer questions and provide directions at reception areas
- Staff the Auxiliary's Gift Shop and select the newest and “trendiest” items
- Organize and sell donated items at the Auxiliary's Thrift Shop
- Bring coffee and freshly baked pastries to busy staff
Become a Greenwich Hospital Volunteer
If you can commit three hours or more each week, Greenwich Hospital welcomes you as a volunteer.
- Volunteer orientations and training seminars ensure that you become familiar with hospital policies and procedures.
- Opportunities are also available for junior volunteers, age 14 and older, who perform many of the same services as adult volunteers. Our “juniors” gain valuable community service experience while knowing they make an important contribution to the hospital.

Healing Shawls
Share the Warmth of Volunteering
Like to knit? Consider putting your needles to work for Greenwich Hospital's “Healing Shawls Project,” a growing movement that provides hand-made comfort to patients at the Bendheim Cancer Center.
The shawls offer physical warmth and emotional comfort that comes from knowing someone cared enough to offer healing support. Easy instructions are available from the Volunteer Office. Call (203) 863-3222. If you don't knit, you can still help by making a donation to purchase yarn.
