In general, giving long-term appreciated securities to Greenwich Hospital provides two income tax benefits: first, no tax is imposed on the appreciated portion of the gift (otherwise generally taxed at long term capital gains rates), and second, the donor will receive a charitable deduction based on the stock's fair market value. Because the donor can avoid the capital gains tax on the donated securities, it is usually more advantageous to contribute appreciated securities directly to the hospital rather than first selling securities (and paying the associated tax on the sale) and then donating the proceeds of the sale.
Please note: This is general information and is not presented as legal or tax advice. Donors should consult with their own legal, tax, accounting and other personal advisors before making any gift.
To make a contribution of this type, please indicate your preference in the 'Comments' box found in the Support Greenwich Hospital section.
Matching GiftsMany businesses have a matching gift program. Under these programs, all or part of an employee's gift to Greenwich Hospital can be matched by the company. Matching gifts are credited to the donor's individual gift record.
