Greenwich Hospital Fiscal Year 2009 Highlights*
Greenwich Hospital continued bringing best practices to the forefront by optimizing patient care safety, enhancing clinical quality and expanding its satellite locations. Among the highlights:

Medical Staff
Forty-eight new physicians joined the medical staff, including 10 primary care physicians, an emergency medicine physician, four hospitalists and many specialists. Twenty-three percent of the new physicians practice in Westchester County, NY.

Provider of Choice
Greenwich Hospital remained the region’s healthcare provider of choice, with New Yorkers accounting for 40 percent of patients. The Emergency Department handled close to 41,000 visits from residents of Fairfield and Westchester counties.

Patient Satisfaction
For a fourth consecutive year, the hospital received the Summit Award from Press Ganey Associates, recognizing healthcare organizations that maintained a patient satisfaction ranking in the 95th percentile or higher for three years. The hospital easily met the criteria with scores that consistently rank in the highest percentiles year after year.

Greenwich Hospital surpassed Connecticut and national scores in the HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) patient surveys conducted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Among all the hospitals in Westchester County and Connecticut, patients gave Greenwich Hospital the highest rating in “willingness to recommend to others.”

Safest Hospital Initiative
Greenwich Hospital continued work toward becoming the safest hospital in America. A total of 130 safety champions were chosen throughout the hospital to lead safety initiatives and promote a safe environment for patients, employees and visitors. From electronic medical records to electronic physician orders to bedside medication verification systems, Greenwich Hospital invested in technological advances that impact every facet of patient and employee safety. The hospital also received a $100,000 Homeland Security grant to enhance safety.

New Satellite Facility
The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Ambulatory Surgery Center opened at 55 Holly Hill Lane in Greenwich. The facility has three operating rooms, 10 post-anesthesia beds and a full-service sterile processing facility.

Clinical Initiatives
With its continued focus on clinical excellence and safety, Greenwich Hospital achieved excellent results for both heart failure and surgical care.

The Greenwich Hospital Breast Center was reaccredited by the American College of Surgeons.

The Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center opened an embryology laboratory at Greenwich Hospital.

The Greenwich Hospital Diagnostic Center at 2015 W. Main St. in Stamford installed an open bore MRI to accommodate people with special needs.

Construction began on the installation of a new linear accelerator at the Bendheim Cancer Center scheduled for completion in January 2010.

The Emergency Department began construction of the Carl and Dorothy Bennett CT Scan and X-Ray Imaging Suite to provide on-site diagnostic testing.

Yale New Haven Health System
Greenwich Hospital continued participating in Yale New Haven Health System initiatives that focused on patient safety, best practices and clinical quality.

Community Outreach
Community Health at Greenwich Hospital (CH@GH) reached 10,000 people through scores of free health fairs at schools, community centers, places of worship, and corporate sites in Connecticut and New York. Thousands took part in health screenings, wellness classes and school-based programs. The Teddy Bear Clinic, programs by Families for Greenwich Hospital and lectures by the Women’s Health Initiative Advisory Board drew residents from across the region.

Recognition
Greenwich Hospital is the first hospital in Connecticut and one of only 36 nationwide to achieve “Stage 6” status by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). The award goes to hospitals that use technology to provide the highest level of patient safety and quality outcomes.

The hospital was named among the top 100 “Most Wired Hospitals” by Hospitals and Health Networks magazine for a ninth year in a row.

For a fourth year in a row, Greenwich Hospital won the “Silver Connecticut Quality Improvement Partnership’s CQIA Innovation Prize” for improving the hospital’s rapid response process.
