Greenwich Hospital is setting a new standard for minimally invasive surgical care using robotic assisted technology with the da Vinci Surgical System. Robotic technology offers patients an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy.
Traditional open surgery often requires incisions between 6-12 inches. Laparoscopic surgery, which involves the use of smaller incisions, can be effective for many routine procedures but has limitations when patients require more complex surgery. Robotic assisted technology allows surgeons to perform complex procedures with increased precision through tiny incisions, 1-2 cm long, using a console, high-definition monitor and four interactive robotic arms.
Advanced robotic technology is used primarily for urological and gynecological surgery.
Robotic technology offers patients an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy. The potential benefits include:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Faster recovery
- Less pain
- Less scarring
- Less blood loss and fewer transfusions
- Fewer complications
- Quicker return to normal activities
- Better clinical outcomes in certain procedures
