Before Your Procedure

Before Your Radiology or Diagnostic Imaging Procedure

Allergies and medications. Before undergoing any radiology procedure, be sure your physician is aware of any allergies you may have and all the medications you take. This includes over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking certain medications for one or more days before the procedure.

Special diets and preparation. Some procedures, such as chest X-rays or simple bone X-rays, require no preparation. Other tests, such as those to look at the digestive tract, require a special diet or sometimes fasting. Your test may require the use of a “contrast” liquid that is either taken by mouth or is injected before the procedure.

Greenwich Hospital's Radiology Department provides sample menus and any other preparation information patients require.

Pre-procedure questions. Call 203-863-4710.

For Women…
Women who may be or who are pregnant or breastfeeding should notify their physician or technologist before having any radiology procedure.

Metal Devices. If you have a pacemaker, stent, or other metal implant, some procedures may not be appropriate for you.

Transportation home. Most radiology procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. This means you do not need to stay in the hospital overnight. Depending on the procedure, however, it is often required or recommended that someone drive you home afterward.
