New Auxiliary Thrift Shop

Opening in September

Bargain hunters and browsers can enjoy an expanded new hunting ground this fall when the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop opens in its new location in the Chickahominy section of Greenwich.

“Everything about the Thrift Shop is new and improved,” says Mimi Grady, president of the Auxiliary, which supports the hospital through its 600-member volunteer corps and proceeds from its Thrift and Gift shops. Close to Byram and Port Chester, with convenient access to I-95, the facility at 199 Hamilton Ave. has 7,000 square feet of space, and its own parking lot.

An advantage to being in the Greenwich community is the exceptional donations that come the Thrift Shop’s way, adds Grady. Three storefront windows will showcase displays of contributed merchandise, which often includes high-end designer clothing, fine china, crystal, quality furniture and rugs.

Inside, shoppers will be able to browse through the full array of goods, as well as an in-store boutique. Enterprising Auxiliary volunteers are outfitting the shop with recycled fixtures from local retailers. An inventory management system and automated clothing conveyor racks will offer even greater efficiency in the donations area.

“Changing locations from the old store on Sherwood Place was an inspiration,” says project manager Barbara Khouri, who has made a career out of creating successful businesses. “It gave us an exciting new vision to be the best in Connecticut, or even New England. And with all the advantages we’ve got going, we have every reason to excel.”

The new vision includes more neighborhood participation with the shop, and an even closer connection with Greenwich Hospital. “We look forward to working with local retailers, schools and residents to help us create window displays and be involved in other ways,” adds Khouri. “We anticipate promoting hospital programs, too, through displays and special events. We’re in a great location, in a beautiful space, and have an incredible team of volunteers to inspire us. There’s no reason why we can’t become a destination shopping location.”

Funds raised by the Auxiliary Thrift Shop help support patient care programs, medical equipment purchases and other hospital needs. In the past decade, Thrift Shop sales have generated more than $3 million for Greenwich Hospital.
