Children (Pediatrics)

Pediatric Gastroenterology

Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital Pediatric Specialty Center at the Greenwich Hospital Campus extends the expertise of gastroenterology medical specialists to the Fairfield-Westchester County area, making it easier for many parents and children to access advanced care. It is the only pediatric gastroenterology practice in Fairfield County where office visits, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including endoscopies, are provided in one location.

Children from birth through age 18 are seen by Anthony Porto, MD, pediatric gastroenterologist at Greenwich Hospital and assistant professor of pediatrics at Yale Medical School. Dr. Porto is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology and has specific interest in obesity, high cholesterol and fatty liver disease. Special Programs
In addition to regular office hours, the following multidisciplinary programs are offered each month.

Dyslipidemia/Fatty Liver Program
More children are being diagnosed with high cholesterol and fatty liver disease. This is due to the increase in childhood obesity and higher awareness of the presence of familial hyperlipidemia.

Patients meet monthly with Dr. Porto, who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of dyslipidemias, and a nutritionist who helps to coordinate individualized care and family education. Dr. Porto works closely with subspecialists in pediatric endocrinology to provide care in insulin resistance and pre-diabetes.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. A board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist will evaluate patients, educate families and closely monitor each patient for the recurrence of symptoms and response to treatment plans. Dr. Porto works closely with nutritionists and pediatric surgeons to provide well-rounded care.

Caring for a child with IBD does not end with remission of the disease. Patients are closely monitored for common nutritional deficiencies, extraintestinal manifestations of the disease and side effects from medications.

Infliximab (Remicade) infusions are done on the pediatric floor of Greenwich Hospital, with experienced pediatric nursing staff, under the direction of a Yale pediatric gastroenterologist. Young adults easily transition to the adult IBD program for a lifetime of care.
