Addiction Recovery Center 30 Years of Service
Greenwich Hospital's Addiction Recovery Center is celebrating 30 years of service to the community. Although much has changed in our culture's social fabric over this period, "the issue of substance abuse remains ever-present and challenging," says ARC's medical director, George Ubogy, MD.
"Alcohol abuse is still the most frequent addiction we treat," notes Dr. Ubogy, who has been with the Center since it began. The Center has seen an increase in dependency on prescription narcotics, and in patients who struggle with multiple addictions at the same time.
"Being part of a general hospital allows us to provide a comprehensive evaluation of a person's health," he explains. "We can identify and manage any medical conditions that are caused by, or coexist with, addiction."
Whether a patient must be hospitalized for detoxification, or goes directly into ARC's outpatient program, behavioral therapy and counseling services begin immediately. The outpatient program continues over a period of four to eight weeks, teaching participants behaviors and coping mechanisms to integrate into their family and working lives.
"Addictions are identified more often today," says Dr. Ubogy. "Once a person is ready to confront an addiction and get their life back, we are here to guide and support them in an exciting growth process. And they often wind up attaining a level of mental health that is enviable."
All services are totally confidential. For information, call 203-863-HOPE (4673) Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm.
ARC has a new support group for people over age 55.
