Special Events September is Prostate Cancer Awareness MonthGet Smart – Get Screened! When you realize that prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among American men, you can understand how important it is to have an annual screening. The American Cancer Society recommends screenings every year starting at age 50–even younger for African Americans, who are more susceptible, or men with a family history of the disease. Because prostate cancer is slow-growing, early detection makes a big difference. The cure rate when caught early is as high as 90 percent. That’s why it’s essential to be screened every year, and pay attention to warning signs. Screenings: a simple 2-part test Screenings are performed quickly and easily using two tests: the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test, and the digital rectal exam (DRE). The blood test will indicate any abnormal levels of the PSA protein produced by the prostate gland. The physical exam reveals irregularities in the prostate’s size, shape, and texture. It helps urologists distinguish between prostate cancer and non-cancerous conditions. Treatment options Support group |
