September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
Get Smart – Get Screened!

When you realize that prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among American men, you can understand how important it is to have an annual screening. The American Cancer Society recommends screenings every year starting at age 50–even younger for African Americans, who are more susceptible, or men with a family history of the disease.

Because prostate cancer is slow-growing, early detection makes a big difference. The cure rate when caught early is as high as 90 percent. That’s why it’s essential to be screened every year, and pay attention to warning signs.

Screenings: a simple 2-part test
Greenwich Hospital supports Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with free screenings, which can detect the disease before symptoms have developed. “We urge men who have never had a screening, and men without medical insurance who may not otherwise get a screening, to make an appointment,” says nurse eductor Diane DeMain, RN. “To meet community needs, we now offer free screenings at three sites." See page 28 for dates, times and locations.

Screenings are performed quickly and easily using two tests: the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test, and the digital rectal exam (DRE). The blood test will indicate any abnormal levels of the PSA protein produced by the prostate gland. The physical exam reveals irregularities in the prostate’s size, shape, and texture. It helps urologists distinguish between prostate cancer and non-cancerous conditions.

Treatment options
Successful treatment options for prostate cancer range from active surveillance to medications, radiation and prostatectomy. Greenwich Hospital offers all of today’s most advanced treatments—including minimally invasive robotic surgery, which results in smaller incisions, faster recovery and fewer side effects.

Support group
Greenwich Hospital also offers the only prostate cancer support group in lower Fairfield county, attracting patients throughout Connecticut and Westchester. See Prostate Cancer Education Forum support group for more information.
