Patient Care Services

The New Greenwich Hospital Breast Center
Breast care and breast cancer prevention are of vital concern to today's health-aware women. With so many developments in recent years, breast care has made significant advances. Now, Greenwich Hospital has gathered the newest technology and a team of top breast specialists into one comprehensive Breast Center.

Opened in April 2001, the Breast Center provides women with easy access to the full spectrum of clinical and support services, from screenings and diagnosis, to treatment and counseling for breast cancer patients. Most services will be located on the third floor of the Cohen Pavilion at 77 Lafayette Place.

Patient Care Services

The Breast Center Facility
Our attractive, state-of-the-art Breast Center includes:

  • private exam rooms
  • four mammography units
  • a modern ultrasound unit
Four board-certified surgeons have offices on the same floor. If a patient requires surgery, it can be performed right across the street at Greenwich Hospital.

A Continuum of Care
The new Breast Center builds on existing cancer services in the Cohen Pavilion, which include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and laboratory services. A comprehensive team of breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists and nurses will work together to provide uninterrupted medical care.

Patient-Friendly Atmosphere
In keeping with Greenwich Hospital's philosophy to care for the whole patient, special efforts have been made to create a pleasant and soothing atmosphere. The comfortable environment and convenience of services can help ease the anxiety a woman may naturally feel in association with breast exams and treatment.

Mammography/Radiology Services
Mammography is a detailed X-ray of the breast and can detect abnormalities even before a lump can be felt. At the Breast Center, mammographies are performed by experienced, licensed technicians on state-of-the-art equipment that is certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Screening mammograms are administered as a baseline exam. If a screening mammogram detects a suspicious area, a more detailed diagnostic mammogram may be performed.

Our Breast Center Team
Dr. Barbara Ward, director of the Breast Center, is a nationally recognized breast cancer surgeon. Prior to joining Greenwich Hospital, she was director of the Yale Comprehensive Breast Center. Other members of the staff include five radiologists, Dr. David Mullen, Dr. Davis Evans, Dr. Christopher Fey, Dr. Laura Hodges and Dr. Linda LaTrenta and Dr. Eric Diamond, a breast pathology specialist. Referral to the Breast Center
The vast majority of women are referred to the Breast Center at Greenwich Hospital by their gynecologists or primary care physicians; however, some patients refer themselves.

Breast Care Guidelines
The American Cancer Society recommends that women age 20 and older should perform a breast self exam monthly. Women from 20 to 39 should have a clinical breast exam every three years. Women 40 and older should have a screening mammogram and clinical breast exam every year.

Cancer Genetic Counseling at Greenwich Hospital can help women with a strong family history of cancer determine if they are at increased risk for breast or other types of cancer.
