Patient Care Services

Too often, people feel that pain is a normal part of life and should be accepted. But for many, the good news is that there is hope. And generally, the earlier the pain is treated, the better the outcome.

By making an appointment at the Sackler Center, patients take the first important step toward controlling their pain. Both inpatients and outpatients are treated. Throughout their care, patients will learn about pain management, aid in the diagnosis of their pain, and participate in their treatment and rehabilitation.

Who Benefits from Pain Care?
Patients are often seen for a pain consultation before or after surgery, or if they are suffering from longstanding pain syndromes that have been unresponsive to other therapies. Some of these conditions include:
  • Lower back and leg pain including sciatica and peripheral neuropathy
  • Shingles or Post Herpetic Neuralgia
  • Neck pain
  • Cancer pain
  • Muscle spasms or myofascial pain
  • Pain from motor vehicle accidents
  • Sport injury pain
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
  • Spasticity
  • Degenerative joint disease and arthritis
  • Ischemic pain
Patient Evaluation
Because diagnosing the cause or source of pain can be difficult, patients coming to the Sackler Center first receive an in-depth evaluation that investigates:
  • the location of the pain
  • the character of the pain (sharp, throbbing, aching)
  • when the pain usually occurs (such as at night, or while climbing stairs)

This information and a complete physical exam help the staff devise an individualized course of therapy. Sometimes patients are asked to keep a pain journal, recording specific information whenever they experience pain. This helps us know if treatment is effective, or needs adjustment to provide maximum relief.

Medical Exam and History
Because many individuals experiencing pain have already undergone tests or are on medication, the Center requests they bring the following with them for the initial visit:
  • all past studies (MRI, CAT scan, X-rays, ultrasounds, blood tests)
  • any evaluations from other physicians
  • lists of all current and past medications and their side effects
Individualized Plan of Care
After the initial consultation, the pain specialist determines whether the patient can be helped and creates a treatment plan. The patient comes for a follow-up visit with the specialist to learn about a wide range of treatment options, which may include:
  • Medication
  • Interventional pain management
    Nerve blocks
    Implanted infusion pumps
    Spinal cord stimulators
    Radiofrequency and cryoanalgesia
  • Physical therapy
  • Radiology
  • Nutritional consultation
  • Counseling and behavioral programs

    Interventional Pain Management
Many new advances in pain management offer Sackler patients more options than ever. These include:

Nerve blocks, usually pain medications or steroids, which are administered through injection directly into the source of pain.

Implanted infusion pumps which deliver a steady, continuous dose of medication for pain or muscle spasticity precisely to the source of the pain. Pumps may be worn externally or implanted under the skin during a surgical procedure.

Spinal cord stimulators which mask pain by providing an alternative sensation and stimulating the release of pain-killing endorphins found naturally in the body.

Radiofrequency and cryoanalgesia, two outpatient methods used to stop or diminish pain by selectively destroying nerve cells.

Percutaneous Vertebroplasty, a minimally invasive procedure that helps relieve pain associated with compression fractures of the spine.

Intradiscal Electrotherapy, a non-surgical treatment for pain related to disorders of the spinal discs.

    Referrals
Patients must be referred to the Center by their physician.
