Before Your Procedure
Before undergoing any radiology procedure, patients should be sure their physician is aware of any allergies they may have and all the medications they take, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements.
The patient’s doctor may ask the patient to stop taking certain medications for one or more days before the radiology procedure.
Women who may be or who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to notify their physician or technologist before having any radiology procedure.
Stents, pacemakers and other metal devices may make certain procedures inappropriate for some patients’ particular circumstances.
Simple bone or chest x-rays require no special preparation. Some tests, such as those to look at the digestive tract, require a special diet or sometimes fasting. Other tests may require the use of a “contrast” liquid that is either taken by mouth or is injected before the procedure.
Most radiology procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, which means patients do not need to stay in the hospital overnight. Depending on the procedure, however, it is often required or recommended that someone drive the patient home afterwards.
Radiology and Today’s Technology
Radiology services are widely used to help diagnose and treat numerous medical conditions including sports injuries, heart problems, digestive issues, nervous system disorders, arthritis, osteoporosis and back pain. Radiology allows doctors to look inside the body to see diseases such as cancer, and joys like the beating heart of a healthy unborn fetus.
Greenwich Hospital provides a full range of diagnostic imaging and numerous nonsurgical interventional procedures. Advances in technology allow for clear, accurate pictures and minimally invasive procedures that are pain-free and require little recovery time.
Radiology procedures are performed with patient safety and comfort as priorities at all times.
