Mammography
Screening Mammograms
Screening mammograms may be performed as a baseline exam and on women who have no symptom of, or past history of, breast cancer or previous abnormal mammograms. The x-ray technique for a screening mammogram is identical to the diagnostic technique. However, the total examination differs in that:
- The screening mammogram is not seen by the radiologist at the time it is taken nor does the radiologist consult with the patient
- The screening mammograms are usually read the next working day
- When findings are questioned at screening mammography, it may be necessary to have the patient return for the supplementary diagnostic mammography to determine if an abnormality is present
Screening mammograms are performed at the Breast Center in the Cohen Pavilion and at our new Diagnostic Center in Stamford.
Diagnostic Mammograms
A diagnostic mammogram is a comprehensive radiologic examination and consultation performed on patients who have a variety of symptoms such as a breast mass, bloody discharge or dimpling. They are also performed on patients who have a past history of breast cancer, breast reconstruction, or on patients who have had a prior abnormal screening.
The exam includes:
- Two standard views of each breast; depending on findings at the time, it may include specialized views
- Direct on-site supervision of a radiologist qualified in mammography and review immediately prior to the patient leaving the hospital
- A consultation with a radiologist, and a clinical breast examination, if appropriate
All diagnostic mammograms are performed at the Breast Center in the Cohen Pavilion. The cost of a diagnostic mammogram at Greenwich Hospital is approximately $250.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsies
Greenwich Hospital was one of the first hospitals in the country and the first in the New York metropolitan area to offer this technique. A specially trained team of physicians, technologists and pathologists performs this non-surgical biopsy. Results are generally available the following day. Our program is fully ACR-accredited.
Cyst Aspiration
Both ultrasound and stereotactic mammography may be used as guides for aspiration of symptomatic cysts.
Needle Localization
Mammographic and/or ultrasound-guided needles mark the location of non-palpable breast abnormalities prior to surgery.
