The Lactation Program at Greenwich Hospital
New moms who choose to breastfeed their infants receive lots of support at Greenwich Hospital before and after the birth of their baby. Lactation consultants are available to answer questions, address their concerns and show them "how to" techniques. In addition, breastfeeding is promoted through the hospital's prenatal classes and parenting support groups. And the support continues after mom and baby leave the hospital, with a home visit by a certified lactation consultant.
Comprehensive, Supportive Program
Greenwich Hospital's Lactation Program includes:
- Prenatal consultations
- Prenatal Breastfeeding Classes for Mom and Dad
- Full-time Lactation Coordinators who work closely with our certified lactation consultants.
- 24-hour a day lactation consultation coverage within the hospital
- 24-hour lactation phone line
- Community outreach to local businesses to help them make it easier for mothers who are continuing to breastfeed after they return to work.
- A staff of pediatricians, neonatologists and nurses who support the idea that breastfeeding is the best way for your baby to be fed.
- Postpartum Visit programs available at the hospital with a certified lactation consultant.
- Breast Pump Rental Station
The Advantages of Breastfeeding
The advantages of breastfeeding for both babies and mothers have been well documented.
- Breastfeeding provides all the nutrients an infant needs for healthy growth and development.
- Breastfeeding is known to reduce the incidence and severity of diseases as well as the potential incidence of allergies.
- Breastfeeding is very convenient, with no formula to mix or bottles to warm up.
- Mothers who nurse their babies may have a reduced risk for breast and ovarian cancer.
- Most importantly, breastfeeding promotes a bond between mother and infant by developing a physically close and emotionally nurturing relationship.
