Overview
The subspecialty of Endocrinology is staffed by board-certified physicians who diagnose and treat disorders in the areas of endocrinology and metabolism. These physicians treat diseases of the hormonal system including those of the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal glands and pancreas.
Our endocrinologists evaluate and treat:
- Osteoporosis and other metabolic diseases of the bone
- Diabetes
- Type I - Type 1 diabetes is a disease in which the body’s ability to make the hormone, insulin, is lost. This results in blood sugar (glucose) levels being higher than normal. Insulin must be replaced so that the body can process foods correctly and maintain near normal blood sugar levels.
- Type II - Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood is higher than normal. It is one of the most common chronic diseases in the United States.
- Gestational Diabetes - Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a condition in which blood sugar levels rise above normal due to increased insulin needs and increased insulin resistance during pregnancy. Hormones that the placenta normally makes are the cause of insulin resistance in pregnancy. GDM occurs in about 2-3% of all pregnancies.
