Pre-Op Video Helps Kids Get Ready For Surgery

It's natural for the prospect of surgery to cause anxiety. But multiply that by a child's imagination, and the fear factor can get intense. Parents of children who need surgery can be just as anxious.

In addition to the pre-op tours the hospital offers, Greenwich Hospital has created a virtual tour on video and DVD to familiarize young patients and their families with what to expect when a child is admitted for surgery. Now online! View the children's pre-op tour. If you experience any problems viewing the online video, please let us know.

Research shows that children who are mentally and emotionally prepared for a procedure do better and recover faster.

Familiarity breeds comfort
The "storyline" follows two children who come to Greenwich Hospital for a procedure. It shows viewers what to expect, gives them a look at the facility, and introduces them to some of the staff who will be taking care of them when they arrive.

Seeing the video will help young patients feel more comfortable, because they know what to expect. Families wishing to obtain a video or DVD of the pre-op tour, or who wish to schedule an actual pre-op tour of the hospital, should call the Pediatric Services department at (203) 863-3553.
