Community Health at Greenwich Hospital

A few years ago, Greenwich Health, a 60-year-old agency serving the community with educational and preventive programs, joined Greenwich Hospital. Today, it is called Community Health at Greenwich Hospital and housed in bright, modern quarters in the Sherman and Gloria H. Cohen Pavilion.

It provides many services related to cardiac health. For instance, for the past ten years it has been conducting annual on-site blood pressure and cholesterol screenings among students in all five secondary schools serving the community. The program also includes teen health risk appraisals. Data is now beginning to be analyzed, to determine whether trends may be evident.

Individual counseling is provided to students who are found to be at risk. The intent is to catch potential problems early, such as a high-fat diet, so that students may make lifestyle changes that will preserve their health later in life. As many as 25 percent of the teens screened are found to be at risk in some way.

A cholesterol and blood pressure screening called Healthy Hearts is offered to adults at the Community Health at Greenwich Hospital offices. In addition, registered nurses go onsite to provide screening and health risk appraisal services for employees of local companies.

Classes offered to the public on a regular basis include heart-healthy cooking, CPR, Smoke Stoppers, Yoga and meditation. Community Health at Greenwich Hospital has been one of several supporters of a community-wide effort to encourage local restaurants to offer heart-healthy choices on their menus.
