Interdisciplinary Cancer Team

Greenwich Hospital provides advanced, comprehensive cancer care with a highly skilled team of professionals who work together to address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Members of the cancer team meet weekly to develop treatment plans tailored to the unique needs of each cancer patient.

The team, all specially trained in their fields, includes:

Cancer care nurses - nurses certified in the care of cancer patients
Dosimetrists - professionals who assist the oncologist by planning and calculating the number of radiation treatments
Geneticists - professionals who test and counsel patients on hereditary components of cancer, including increased risk factors
Integrative medicine specialists - professionals who attend to the emotional and physical wellbeing of patients through integrative medicine techniques that complement traditional cancer treatment. These techniques include acupuncture, meditation, massage, stress management and more.
Medical oncologists - board-certified physicians who treat cancer using systemic therapies (chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy)
Nutritionists - professionals in nutrition and diet
Occupational therapists - professionals who provide rehabilitative services so that patients can perform daily living activities with greater independence
Pastoral care providers - the Department of Spiritual Care, who offer support consistent with the beliefs or religious practices of patients and their families
Pathologists - board-certified physicians with expertise in the origin and development of disease who perform various chemical analyses of blood and the microscopic analysis of body tissues
Pharmacists - professionals who prepare and dispense medicinal drugs
Physical therapists - professionals who provide rehabilitative services and therapy to help restore bodily functions and increase mobility
Radiation oncologists - board-certified physicians who treat cancer with radiation therapy
Radiation therapy technologists - professionals who operate radiation equipment and position the patient for treatment
Radiologists - board-certified physicians who administer and interpret a wide spectrum of imaging technologies
Social workers - professionals who assist patients and families during and after hospitalization with counseling and other support services
Speech-language pathologists - professionals who treat communication and swallowing disorders
Surgical oncologists - board-certified surgeons who treat cancer using surgery to remove cancerous tumors and tissue. These include general surgeons, breast surgeons, urologists, thoracic surgeons and others.
