Diagnostic Imaging

Radiological or imaging tools play an integral role in the detection of cancer. These tests include x-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography. The type of imaging technique used depends on whether the patient has breast, prostate, lung, colon or another type of cancer. For detailed information about these techniques, visit the Radiology Services section of this web site.

Some imaging tests can determine if cancer has spread throughout the body. These enable physicians to more accurately stage the disease and select the best treatment. Imaging techniques also provide a non-invasive alternative for gathering information about the cancer. This may eliminate the need for a biopsy or other more invasive procedures.

Biopsy
A biopsy involves the removal of cells or tissues for examination under a microscope by a pathologist to determine if cancer cells are present. The type of biopsy depends on whether the patient has breast, prostate, lung, colon or another kind of cancer.
