A Message from Daniel L. Mosley,
Chairman of the Board

April 2008

Dear Friends,

As a longtime leader in the fight against infectious diseases, Greenwich Hospital has developed a progressive infection control and prevention program designed to protect hospital patients as well as residents in area communities. The program includes a full range of measures, from preventing the spread of infections to ensuring the hospital can handle an attack with biologic agents.

Among the strategies in place under the leadership of James R. Sabetta, MD, Section Chief of Infectious Diseases, are:

  • Hospital staff is specially trained and equipped to treat patients exposed to biologic agents. The hospital has decontamination shelters in the event of an emergency.
  • Patients at risk for MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) infections are screened and isolated if found to harbor MRSA, which has reduced the small number of hospital-acquired MRSA infections by half. Hospital officials also work with local health departments to educate the public on the risks of acquiring MRSA in schools, gyms and at home.
  • A hand hygiene campaign has increased awareness about the risk of all infections to patients and employees. The hospital has also developed an innovative environmental cleaning program to sanitize all instruments and equipment.
  • Hospital officials serve on the board of the American Practitioners of Infection Control and work with the Connecticut Hospital Association to share knowledge on the best ways to control the spread of drug-resistant organisms.
  • The hospital provides many types of immunizations required for foreign travel, including yellow fever, malaria, typhoid, meningitis, hepatitis A, polio and Japanese encephalitis.

A contribution to the Annual Fund will support Greenwich Hospital’s commitment to tackle infectious diseases that threaten the health of the communities we serve. Your generous, tax-deductible donation can significantly impact the hospital’s ability to garner the expertise and resources necessary to quickly and effectively address challenges in today’s volatile world.

On behalf of the entire Greenwich Hospital community, I thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Daniel L. Mosley
Chairman, Board of Trustees
