Pain Management for Cancer
Many people with cancer fear that the pain associated with their illness will not be controlled. Almost all people are able to have their pain controlled with medication, interventional pain procedures, or both.
Greenwich Hospital’s pain physicians provide evaluations on an outpatient basis or for those admitted to the hospital. The type of cancer and its location will determine the best method of reducing the pain. Patients may also experience pain from some of the cancer treatment they receive. Other treatments for cancer, such as radiation, may reduce pain dramatically.
A Range of Treatment Options
Our pain physicians understand that each person is unique in their ability to cope with pain and maintain their level of function. They work closely with patients to produce a plan that is flexible and efficient. Difficulties with fatigue, mood, and sleep may also influence pain and the ability to tolerate it. These symptoms are addressed as well for the best possible outcomes.
Medical Treatment of Pain
Patients meet with Steven Bennett, DO
, a board-certified pain management and palliative care physician.
At Greenwich Pain Consulting Services, located in the main hospital, Dr. Bennett develops, monitors, and modifies the medication regimen. Patients and families are well educated about the safe use of pain medications. A physician referral is required.
Interventional Pain Procedures
Patients meet with Christian Whitney, DO
, a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain specialist at Greenwich Hospital’s Sackler Center for Pain Management. A physician referral is required.
Procedures that reduce pain include temporary and permanent nerve blocks, implanted infusion pumps, spinal cord stimulators, and others. In some situations these techniques will enable patients to lower their pain medications.
Integrative Medicine Techniques
The hospital’s Integrative Medicine Program
offers a variety of complementary therapies that may help patients manage cancer-related pain. These include massage, acupuncture, meditation and Healing Touch.
