History

Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary
GH history Dr. Harriet Baker Hyde also founded the Women's Committee (1907-1910) which later became the Women's Board (1911-1949) at the new hospital. They were both staffed with volunteers who were dedicated to the efficient upkeep of the hospital. They were in charge of the linen room, clothing and housing supplies, and nurses' home, and inspected the hospital every week for cleanliness and deficient or inadequate equipment. They continued to operate until the hospital took over their work in the 1940s. Besides their daily responsibilities, the Women's Board raised money which went into the hospital's general maintenance fund. The Depression in the 1930s and later the formation of the Community Chest and Council put an end to fund-raising. In the 1920s interest centered on inspection, supplies, linen purchasing, the nurses' home clothing, the School of Nursing, the Junior Auxiliary and the Thrift Shop which opened in 1921. In the 1930s emphasis shifted to the clinic, social service, entertainment, sewing, flowers, nominating and membership. In the 1940s special attention was given to the Service Shop, publicity, by-laws, volunteers and gifts. In December, 1949, the Women's Board ceased to exist. Everyone connected with it became members of the new Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary.
