History

Greenwich Hospital Begins Service
The new hospital on Milbank Avenue began service on September 12, 1906 with four attendings, ten consulting doctors, two nursing staff and seven student nurses. The driving forces behind the hospital were Drs. Fritz Carleton Hyde and Harriet Baker Hyde. They both graduated from the Medical Department of the University of Michigan in 1900. Fritz Hyde wanted to move to the West Coast, but Harriet Hyde felt an enormous responsibility to her mother who had heart trouble. So they moved to Greenwich. The other attendings were Dr. Charles Smith and Dr. John B. Solley. Dr. Solley wanted to introduce X-ray machines if he could. During those days residing in Greenwich was a prerequisite for the attending staff.
