History
Early days of Greenwich Hospital
The Greenwich Hospital Association dates from a meeting in a Methodist Chapel on March 2, 1903 at which Mr. A. Foster Higgins presided. The meeting was called to arouse a wider interest in building a hospital in the heart of the borough. On June 15, 1903, the State Legislature granted The Greenwich Hospital Association a charter of incorporation, which also granted $25,000 to be paid when the Association had raised $75,000. It did, and in the spring of 1905, the Association purchased the "Octagon House" on Milbank Avenue. It had raised $100,259 for the building fund and $4,000 for an equipment fund, so after paying $52,250 for the land and building, that left $52,000 for the endowment.
